Critical Thinking, Powerful Dialogue

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Albert Einstein

Leading well requires communicating well and thinking well!

Critical thinking is that mode of thinking – about any subject, content, or problem – in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them. (Richard Paul)

Through critical thinking, we are able to make the best decisions, while sorting through many different sources of information, many of them flawed.

Complete and correct information is a critical foundation to our thinking.  It works along side our critical thinking to help us analyze what information we need, to ask effective questions, listen critically to the answers, and to reflect and reframe what we hear in order to be sure we’re communicating accurately and completely.  Finally, it depends on our ability to act on our understanding, including making requests and issuing challenges to our colleagues and teammates to take action.

The benefits of effective communications and critical thinking are many!

  • Making better business decisions
  • Making better personal and family decisions
  • Becoming a stronger leader
  • Working more effectively on a team
  • Becoming more aware of our own biases and blind spots, and those of others
  • Asking better questions
  • Listening more attentively to the answers and providing feedback to close the loop
  • Reframing ideas to help our partner refine their thinking and gain clarity
  • Building better relationships
